## TLDR

- People looking for someone to manage their money type "financial advisor". The industry calls the same person a wealth manager. Use the public's word on every page that is meant to be found.
- After "financial advisor" itself, the biggest searches have "near me" in them. They are retail. Google answers them with a map of nearby firms first. A complete Google Business Profile and reviews are the parts of that map ranking a firm can work on.
- Affluent searchers type a city, a "best" or "top" list, a fee question, or a planning topic. Those are the pages an independent firm can get onto, and each one has a specific page to write.
- Wealthy families type "family office", or they already know the firm they are searching for. If you serve families, you need one page that says what you do for a family, in those words.
- Some phrases look cheap to rank for because the people typing them are not in the market: job seekers, students, people looking up a word. Read the results page before you build anything for a phrase.

## The article in one table

**Table 1.** Who searches, what they type, and what to do. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

| Who is searching | What they type (searches a month) | Who is on the first page | What a firm can do |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Retail (under about $500,000 to invest) | "financial advisor" 12,100 · "financial advisor near me" 6,600 · "wealth management near me" 3,600 | Government guide, banks, advisor networks, branch locators, and a map of nearby firms | Use "financial advisor" on the pages meant to be found. Complete your Google Business Profile and, after checking with your compliance team, ask clients for reviews. Both help a firm appear on the map. |
| Affluent (about $500,000 to $5 million, often a business owner) | "financial advisor toronto" 880 · "wealth management toronto" 390 · "business succession planning" 880 · "estate planning canada" 590 · "best" and "top" list phrases about 660 combined · questions asked before hiring about 510 combined | City pages: banks, networks and two or three independent firms. Lists: blogs, the Globe, a trade magazine, and, on the page we read live, two independent firms with their own "best firms" article. Questions: forums, dictionaries and foreign firms, with one independent Canadian firm across the four pages | Build a city page. Write the "best firms" comparison. Answer the fee questions in Canadian terms. Write about business succession planning in those words. |
| Wealthy family ($5 million and up, or a family office) | "family office canada" 210 · "multi family office" 140 · "high net worth wealth management" 260 · and the firm's own name | Independent family offices, accounting firms and a family-office publication. "High net worth wealth management" is a looser mix | One page that says what you do for a family, in those words. Wealthy families also reach a firm by typing its name. |
| Not in the market | "succession planning" 1,300 (mostly the HR meaning) · "portfolio manager" 720 · "portfolio manager canada" 110 · "what is wealth management" 320 | HR software and HR pages, job boards, career pages, dictionaries and explainers | Do not build pages for these phrases, however cheap they look. |

Earlier this year we shared a quick look at what Canadians type into Google when they are looking for someone to manage their money. Since then, we have measured a few hundred more phrases, through client work and our own research, and we pulled fresh numbers for this article in September 2026.

This is for the person who decides what goes on a wealth firm's website in Canada and what the firm writes. It covers the demand that exists before a prospect knows your name. Whether a smaller firm can compete for that demand, and how, is a separate piece we are working on.

This article focuses on Google searches. As we all know, in addition to Google, ChatGPT and the other AI assistants are now part of how people search. We cover that as well in [a different article](https://grow.paulainc.ca/insights/how-to-get-cited-by-chatgpt-and-ai-search-a-guide-for-financial-advisors).

## A quick guide to reading the numbers

- **Searches a month:** an estimate of how many times people type a phrase into Google in Canada in an average month.
- **Difficulty:** a score from 0 to 100 for how hard it is to show up on the first page of results without paying for ads. Above 70 is very hard. Below 30 is within reach for a small firm with a good page.
- **Who is searching:** our read of who types the phrase. The tools cannot see how much money a searcher has, so we read it from the words and from the page Google shows for them, and the page is in every table so you can check our reading.

We use four labels. Retail: someone with under about $500,000 to invest, looking for a branch or a first advisor. Affluent: about $500,000 to $5 million, often a business owner, with a specific thing to plan. Wealthy family: $5 million and up, a family office, or an institution such as a pension plan. Not in the market: a job seeker, a student, or someone looking up what a word means. We set these bands; the tool does not measure them.

The numbers come from Semrush, a search analysis tool, cross-checked, where the two overlap, against Google's own keyword planner. First-page readings come from Semrush's record of the results; the three pages shown as screenshots were read live on Google on September 25, 2026.

**Table 2.** What retail searchers type. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| financial advisor | 12,100 | 49 | Government guide, advisor association, two banks, Edward Jones, Sun Life, a career guide, a trade-magazine list, a forum |
| financial advisor near me | 6,600 | 51 | Locator pages of four banks, Sun Life, Edward Jones and a network; one fee-only planner |

When someone wants a person to help with their money, they search "financial advisor". That phrase gets 12,100 searches a month. "Wealth manager", the title the industry uses for the same person, including on its websites and marketing materials, gets 320, and four of the ten results for it are job boards and career pages. "Boutique wealth management" gets 20 searches a month in all of Canada, and the number is the same every month of the year.

Here is what this looks like in practice. A firm describes itself on its website as "boutique private wealth management for high-net-worth families". The person it wants to reach opens Google and types "financial advisor toronto", 880 searches a month. The firm and the person are using different words for the same thing, and Google matches words.

What the firm writes

"boutique private wealth management for high-net-worth families"

20 searches a month

for the phrase boutique wealth management

What the person types

"financial advisor toronto"

880 searches a month

After "financial advisor" itself, the biggest searches have "near me" in them, and they are retail. The written results are mostly the branch locators of the banks and the networks. Above them, Google shows a map of nearby firms. When we searched "financial advisor near me" from Toronto on September 25, 2026, the map was the first thing on the page: three planning firms, each with more than 100 reviews and a rating of 4.9 or 5.0. No bank was on the map. Google says its map ranking depends on three things: how well a Business Profile matches the search, how far the firm is from the person searching, and how well known the firm is, which includes its reviews and the websites that link to it. Google also says there is no way to pay for a better position on the map.

**What to do.** Put "financial advisor" in the title of every page that is meant to bring people in: your homepage and your articles. Your services pages, which people read after they find you, can keep the industry's words. Then complete your Google Business Profile, with your address, hours, category and photos. If your firm is registered, check with your compliance team before asking clients for reviews. For "near me" searches, that profile is what appears on the map.

## 2. Affluent searchers type a city, a list, a question or a planning topic, and those are the pages an independent firm can get onto

The affluent searcher is the one most independent firms want, and the one the data is best at showing. Their searches take four forms, and each form brings up a different page. We take them in turn.

### 2a. Searches with a city in them have independent firms on the first page, and searches with "canada" in them mostly do not

**Table 3.** City phrases and country phrases. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| financial advisor toronto | 880 | 50 | Government guide, two networks, two banks, a forum, two lists; two independent firms |
| wealth management toronto | 390 | 59 | IG and an IG advisor team, CI, Scotia (twice), Raymond James, Morgan Stanley; three independent firms |
| investment advisor toronto | 260 | 13 | BMO Nesbitt Burns, TD, Canaccord, Edward Jones, the Globe; three independent firms |
| wealth management canada | 590 | 77 | RBC, IG, Manulife, Canaccord, Scotia, CI Assante, a college, MD Financial, BMO. No independent firm (read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026) |
| financial advisor canada | 210 | 29 | Government guide, advisor association, two banks, Edward Jones, the Globe, two professional bodies, a forum; one independent firm |

"Wealth management toronto" has three independent firms on its first page beside IG, CI and Scotia. "Investment advisor toronto" has three, at a difficulty of 13. "Wealth management canada" has none: nine institutions, from RBC to BMO, with a college certificate program in the middle. "Financial advisor canada" has one. A person who types a city is most likely looking for a firm near them, and Google shows the firms in that city, including small ones. A person who types "canada" is shown the national banks and networks.

![Google results page for "wealth management canada", annotated: AI Overview; Bank, Advisor network, Insurer, Advisor network, Bank, Fund company network, College, Bank-owned, Bank; one paid result.](https://grow.paulainc.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/blog-images/02a_wealth-management-canada.png?width=720&name=02a_wealth-management-canada.png)

**Fig. 1 ·** The first page for 'wealth management canada', read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026. No independent firm on it.

**What to do.** Build one page with your city in the title, for example "Wealth management in Toronto", that says who you serve, where you are and how to reach you. Independent firms already appear on these pages. Do not build a "wealth management canada" page; the banks and networks fill that first page, at a difficulty of 77.

### 2b. "Best" and "top" bring up lists, and two independent firms are on that page because they wrote the list

**Table 4.** The list phrases. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

Show all the numbers

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| top financial advisors in canada | 140 | 23 | The Globe, government guide, Wealth Professional, Barron's, a comparison site, two networks, a forum; two independent firms |
| top wealth management firms canada | 140 | 21 | The Globe, two blog lists, Wealth Professional, RBC, a directory; two independent firms with their own lists (read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026) |
| top 10 wealth management companies in canada | 110 | 20 | Two blog lists, IG, Wealth Professional, Raymond James, RBC, the Globe; one independent firm |
| best wealth management firms canada | 90 | 22 | The Globe, two blog lists, Raymond James, Wealth Professional, TD, a forum; two independent firms |
| best financial advisors in canada | 90 | 21 | Government guide, a forum, Wealth Professional, the Globe, a blog list; two independent firms |
| top wealth management firms toronto | 90 | 26 | Two blog lists, Raymond James, Wealth Professional, an IG advisor team, the Globe, a directory, TD; two independent firms |

Together the list phrases get about 660 searches a month, and their difficulty is 20 to 26. The person typing them is most likely close to hiring and has not picked a firm. The pages are lists: a personal-finance blog, the Globe and Mail's annual ranking, a trade magazine, a lender's blog. Each page also has one or two independent firms. On the page we read live, the two independent firms, Nicola Wealth and Amur Capital, are there with their own articles on the best wealth management firms in Canada.

![Google results page for "best wealth managers in canada", annotated: four paid results at the top and two at the bottom; Blog list, Newspaper ranking, Bank, Magazine list, Lender list, Bank, Firm's own list, Firm's own list, Government guide.](https://grow.paulainc.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/blog-images/02b_best-wealth-managers-in-canada.png?width=720&name=02b_best-wealth-managers-in-canada.png)

**Fig. 2 ·** The first page for 'best wealth managers in canada', read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026. Two firms got onto it by writing the list.

These pages also show paid ads before the first written result. On the list page we read there were four: a matching service, a US wealth firm, TD and Nicola Wealth. Smaller firms advertise on these searches too; on "wealth management", two of the four ads were from small independent firms. Paying is a fair way to put good content in front of people who are already searching, and it is the fastest way onto these pages. If you are weighing it, we ran a webinar on exactly that: whether Google Ads make sense for your firm, what needs to be in place first, what to budget, and how to get a first campaign live in 30 days.

[Google Ads 101 for Wealth Management Firms · Webinar ReplayWhether Google Ads make sense for your firm, what to budget, and how to get a first campaign live in 30 days.](https://grow.paulainc.ca/insights/google-ads-101-for-wealth-management-firms-webinar-replay)

**What to do.** Write the comparison the searcher is asking for, titled with the phrase: "The best wealth management firms in Canada" or "in Toronto". Name the firms fairly, including your own, and say what each one is for. And work to get into the lists that already exist; the trade magazine and the newspaper's annual ranking are both on that page.

### 2c. The questions people ask before hiring are answered mostly by forums and foreign firms

**Table 5.** The questions people ask before hiring. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| how much does a financial advisor cost | 170 | 40 | A forum, two US comparison sites, Edward Jones, a dictionary, the government guide, a directory; one independent Canadian firm |
| investment vs wealth management | 140 | 22 | Two US advisors, a Wellington-Altus advisor, a Scotia advisor team, a dictionary, a forum, a business school, a careers site. No independent Canadian firm |
| how do financial advisors get paid | 110 | 11 | A forum, Edward Jones, three US firms, a savings platform, a training body, a dictionary, a Scotia advisor team, an advisor in a Desjardins network. No independent Canadian firm |
| what is the difference between wealth management and financial planning | 90 | 22 | A dictionary, a forum, then Australian, British, US and Indian firms. No Canadian firm |

These questions are searched about 510 times a month in total. The pages that answer them are Reddit threads, Investopedia, and firms in other countries that describe fees in their own countries. Across the four pages there is one independent Canadian firm, on the first question. The other Canadian results are advisors inside Edward Jones, Scotia, Wellington-Altus and a Desjardins network. The difficulty scores are between 11 and 40.

**What to do.** Write one page per question, titled with the question: "How much does a financial advisor cost in Canada", "How financial advisors get paid in Canada". State your own fees on it. A page titled "Our fee philosophy" is unlikely to show up for any of these, because none of the words people type are in it.

### 2d. Business owners type "business succession planning", not "what to do after selling a business"

**Table 6.** Topics and situations. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

Show all the numbers

| Search phrase | Type of phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| business succession planning | Name of a topic | 880 | 32 | RBC, BDC, Edward Jones, a payroll company, Canada Life, two accounting firms, Sun Life, TD |
| estate planning canada | Name of a topic | 590 | 28 | Wealthsimple, CPA Canada, the government, IG, RBC, Scotia, two accounting firms, one small firm |
| what to do after selling a business | A situation, described | 10 | not scored | Too few searches for a reading |
| tax implications of selling a private corporation | A situation, described | too few to measure | not scored | Too few searches for a reading |
| how to invest 5 million dollars | A situation, described | 20 | not scored | Too few searches for a reading |
| financial advisor for business owners | A label a firm uses | 20 | not scored | Too few searches for a reading |

There are two ways to type the same need. One is the name of a topic, "business succession planning", 880 searches a month. The other is a description of the situation, "what to do after selling a business", 10. It would be reasonable to assume that wealthy people describe their problem in their own words. The numbers say they do not, or not enough of them for Google to count. The same goes for the labels firms use: "financial advisor for business owners" gets 20 searches a month, and advertisers pay about US$5.40 a click on it.

Be careful with "succession planning" on its own. It gets 1,300 searches a month and looks like the bigger opportunity, but most of its first page is HR software and government HR pages, because the phrase usually means who takes over a job when someone leaves. The business owner's search is "business succession planning".

**What to do.** If you want to be found by a business owner who is planning to sell, write about business succession planning, in those three words, and about estate planning. Do not write for "succession planning" on its own; most of that page is about HR. Do not build pages around situations or labels; each gets 20 searches a month or fewer.

Very few people use Google to research leaving their advisor. "How to fire your financial advisor", "changing financial advisors", "switching financial advisors" and "second opinion financial advisor" add up to about 70 searches a month in all of Canada. We think people make that decision some other way, and search again only when they are ready to choose. If that is right, the person who is unhappy with their current advisor finds you through the same pages as a first-time buyer.

## 3. Wealthy families type "family office", or they already know the firm they are searching for

**Table 7.** The phrases where the wealthy family is the searcher. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| family office canada | 210 | 33 | A family-office publication, two independent family offices, RBC, four accounting firms, a UK family-office advisory, LinkedIn |
| multi family office | 140 | 24 | Two independent family offices, an independent wealth firm, a US family office, a family-office publication, Wikipedia, a forum, two accounting firms, a venture-capital association |
| high net worth wealth management | 260 | 20 | A Raymond James advisor team, a CI Assante advisor team, one independent family office, a fund company, a bank, a blog, a forum, a software vendor, a US family office, a US business school |
| private wealth management | 1,000 | 56 | The private-wealth arms of four banks and two networks, a career page, a trade magazine, a forum. No boutique |

Wealthy families rarely type "boutique" to describe themselves. They are most visible in the family-office phrases. "Family office canada" gets 210 searches a month and "multi family office" 140, at difficulty 33 and 24, and the first pages are independent family offices, accounting firms and a family-office publication. "High net worth wealth management", 260 searches at difficulty 20, is a looser page: advisor teams at Raymond James and CI Assante, one independent family office, and a mix of a bank, a blog and a US business school. Together these three phrases get about 600 searches a month, and the person typing them is most likely the person a family-office firm wants. "Private wealth management" is different: every bank has a division by that name, and four banks and two networks fill that page.

Wealthy families also type the name of the firm they have been told about. This article is about the demand that exists before a prospect knows your name. How a firm is found by name, and what the prospect sees when they arrive, is the next piece.

**What to do.** If you serve families, have one page titled with the words they type, "Family office services in Canada" or "Multi-family office in Toronto", that says what you do for a family and who is on the team. The difficulty is 24 to 33, and the firms already there are family offices like yours. Then search your firm's name and read the first page. Your website, your Google Business Profile and anything else that comes up should describe what you do for families in the same words.

## 4. Some phrases are typed by people who are not in the market, and the results page tells you which

**Table 8.** Phrases typed by people who are not in the market. Searches and difficulty: Semrush, Canada database, September 2026. Who is on the page: Semrush's record of the first page, September 2026, except where marked as read live

Show all the numbers

| Search phrase | Searches a month | Difficulty | Who is on the first page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| portfolio manager canada | 110 | 12 | The CSI career map, a federal building-energy tool that happens to be called Portfolio Manager, the industry association, a do-it-yourself investing blog, LinkedIn and Indeed job listings, a Fidelity fund page, two explainers of what the job is (read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026) |
| portfolio manager | 720 | 19 | CFA Institute and CSI career pages, the same building-energy tool, Investopedia, Wikipedia, Indeed job listings, two bank explainers, a Reddit careers thread (read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026) |
| succession planning | 1,300 | 45 | BDC (on business succession), then the Treasury Board, HR software vendors, HR associations and a university HR page. Mostly the HR meaning |
| what is wealth management | 320 | 50 | Explainers from BMO, National Bank and Morgan Stanley, the CFA Institute, Investopedia, Wikipedia, a forum. The most common question around "wealth management" |

"Portfolio manager canada" looks like a phrase a firm should try to rank for: a regulated title, 110 searches a month, difficulty 12. The first page is the CSI career map, job listings, a fund page and two explainers of what the job is, and Google's own related searches under it are salary, jobs, how to become one, certification. The person typing it mostly wants to become one. The difficulty is low, and the firm pages that do rank for it, from a fund company and a bank's wealth arm, explain what the job is rather than offer to do it. Two wealth firms do buy ads on it; their two sponsored results sit in the middle of the page.

"Succession planning" is mostly the human-resources meaning: who takes over a job when someone leaves. "What is wealth management" is someone learning the term. Two other phrases look like they belong here but do not fit as neatly, so we have kept them out of the table. "Asset management" (2,400 a month) is split. About half of its first page is the physical meaning, looking after roads, water pipes and buildings. The rest is a dictionary, a US regulator, a fund company and a bank explainer, with a map of three Toronto investment firms above them. "OCIO" (880) is a real search, but mostly an institutional one: the page is written for pension plans and foundations, with one Toronto firm offering the same service to families.

**Fig. 3 ·** The first page for 'portfolio manager canada', read live on Google from Toronto, September 25, 2026.

**What to do.** Do not build pages for these phrases, however cheap they look. Before you build a page for any phrase, open a private browser window, type the phrase, and read the ten results. Ask one question: would the person I am trying to reach have clicked on any of these? If the page is job boards, dictionaries, career guides or government departments, the people searching are not in the market.

1. 1Open a private window and type the phrase
2. 2Read the ten results on the first page

## What to do, by the kind of firm you are

If you serve retail savers and have branches.

Put "financial advisor" in your page titles. Complete the Google Business Profile for every branch and, with your compliance team's approval, ask clients for reviews. For "near me" searches, the map appears above the written results. Answer the fee questions in Canadian terms; the pages that answer them today are forums and foreign firms.

If you serve business owners and affluent families.

Build the page with your city in the title. Write the "best firms" comparison, with the phrase in the title and your firm named fairly among the others. Write about business succession planning and estate planning in those words. Answer the fee questions and state your own.

If you serve wealthy families.

Have one page with "family office" in the title that says what you do for a family. Then search your firm's name and check that the first page describes you in the same words. How a firm is found by name is the next piece.

Whoever you serve, the same pages help with AI assistants. ChatGPT and the other assistants find pages to cite through a search engine, so a page that ranks for one of these questions is more likely to be found. It is not a guarantee, and many pages that assistants cite do not rank in Google's top 10 for the same question. But it is the part a firm can work on.

*Figures from Semrush, Canada database, pulled September 8 and 25, 2026, and, where the two overlap, cross-checked against Google's keyword planner. Volumes are twelve-month averages. First-page readings from Semrush's record of the results, September 2026; pages marked "read live" were read on google.ca from Toronto on September 25, 2026.*
